Each child has individual educational goals formulated at initial and annual review staffings by teachers, parents, AEA
267 staff, and the child. A child may receive academic and/or behavioral services through support or pull-out programs in
special education classrooms. All students in the special education program are a part of collabratively taught environments.
Students participate in all general education classrooms, with the special and general education teachers working and teaching
together the curriculum designed for middle school students. This allows for students to remain in the general classroom
as much as possible and still receive support services for the area of need.
Technology Individual Education Programs
(IEPs) are web-based for each student's academic or behavior needs. Computer
programs, such as Homeroom.com, are used to reinforce skills. Another computer program used is the Kurzweil program.
It is used for a variety of activities, such as reading vocabulary words, stories, study guides, and tests to students.
It can also assist with editing written work. A recent computer program newly used by students is the Co-Writer system.
This allows students to use word prediction software to assist in typing. Students type in one-to-two letters of a word
and the software gives four choices for the student to pick. The words are read aloud by the computer to the student,
so he/she can be assured of picking the correct word. Other
skills, such as reading strategies, telling time, giving change, writing summaries and short stories are all used in helping
students to strengthen his/her weaker academic areas. Students
are rewarded for each test or quiz. "Cardinal" tickets are given for As, Bs. and Cs earned by students.
Students then use these tickets to purchase items out of the Cardinal basket. Items include pencils, erasers, small
candy items, markers, and free time. Free time includes working on computers, drawing, playing a game with a friend,
and going to the library.
Teaching Strategies Special education teachers use a variety of
strategies and curriculum to meet the needs of students. These include 6 Trait Writing Skills, Kansas University Reading
and Writing Strategies, Prentice Hall Mathematics, and Success for Struggling Readers.
